William CognityBy William Cognity · 20 October 2026 · 5 min read
In short: A simple study abroad checklist: choose countries, check requirements, plan money, prepare documents and apply on time.

Studying abroad takes planning. Start early and use this ten-step list.

Steps 1 to 3: Decide

  • Write why you want to study abroad.
  • Choose three to five countries and compare cost, language and visa rules.
  • Pick courses that fit your four factors: personality, skills, interests and goals.

Steps 4 to 6: Check requirements

  • Read each university page for entry needs.
  • Check test needs such as English or SAT or ACT. See SAT or ACT.
  • Note every deadline in one calendar.

Steps 7 to 8: Money

  • Estimate fees, living costs and travel.
  • Search for scholarships early.

Steps 9 to 10: Apply

  • Write a strong personal statement.
  • Collect documents and references, then apply and track each application.
