How to Prepare for a University Interview

William CognityBy William Cognity · 11 August 2026 · 3 min read
In short: Simple, calm steps to prepare for a university interview: what to research, how to practise answers and what to do on the day, without memorising scripts.

An interview can feel scary, but it is mostly a conversation. The university wants to know you better and see how you think. You do not need to be perfect. You need to be prepared, honest and curious. Here is how to get ready.

Find out the format

Not every university interviews students, and formats differ a lot. It might be online or in person, with one person or a panel, short or long. Some courses use group tasks or ask you to talk about a problem. Check the official admissions page or the email you received. If it is unclear, it is fine to politely ask the admissions office.

Know your application well

Re-read everything you submitted: your personal statement, your subjects and any projects. Interviewers often ask about things you wrote. Be ready to explain why you chose the course and what interests you in it. If you need help with that choice, see how to choose a major when you are unsure.

Research the course and the university

  • Read the course page and look at the modules.
  • Find one or two things that really interest you.
  • Think about why this place fits you, beyond its ranking.

Specific answers sound better than general praise. "I liked the project module on local water systems" beats "It is a great university".

Practise common questions

Practise out loud. Questions you might hear include:

  • Why do you want to study this subject?
  • Tell me about something you enjoyed learning recently.
  • What are your strengths, and what do you want to improve?
  • Where do you see yourself in a few years?

Do not memorise a script. Write a few bullet points for each answer, then speak naturally. Ask a friend, teacher or family member to play the interviewer. You can also record yourself and listen back.

Be ready for questions you do not know

Some interviewers ask tricky questions to see how you think. It is fine to pause. Say, "Let me think for a moment." Then explain your thinking step by step. Saying "I am not sure, but I would guess..." is better than staying silent or pretending.

Prepare your own questions

Prepare two or three questions to ask at the end. Ask about teaching style, student support or projects. Avoid questions that the website already answers.

On the day

  • Plan your outfit and your route or tech the day before.
  • Arrive or log in early.
  • Sleep well and eat something.
  • Smile, listen carefully and take your time.

Afterwards, write down what went well and what you would change. Nerves are normal, and interviewers know it. No one can promise an offer, but good preparation helps you show your real self. If you want to practise with someone, you can book a session with us.

One more tip: talk about your own experiences, not only your grades. Interviewers enjoy hearing how you learn, what you read, and what puzzles you. Speak at a calm pace, and it is fine to take a sip of water if you need a moment.
