How to Become a School Career Counsellor: Steps, Skills and Training
School career counsellors help students choose subjects, courses and careers. The route into the job is different in every country, but the steps are similar. This guide shows the common path and what to do first.
What a school career counsellor does
You help students understand themselves, learn about options and make a plan. You also work with parents, teachers and universities. A normal week mixes one-to-one meetings, group lessons and planning.
Step 1: Check the rules in your country
Some countries ask for a teaching or counselling qualification. Others do not. Look at your education ministry website and at job adverts for school counsellors. Note which qualifications they ask for.
Step 2: Build the core skills
- Listening and asking good questions
- Explaining assessments in simple words
- Knowing how school systems and applications work
- Writing clear plans for each student
- Staying fair and honest with students and parents
Step 3: Get training
Look for a recognised degree or certificate in counselling, psychology or education. Add short courses on career guidance and assessments. Choose training that includes practice with real students, not only theory.
Step 4: Get experience
Volunteer, assist a counsellor, or run a small career club. Keep a record of what you did and what students did next. This record helps you in interviews.
Step 5: Use a clear method
Schools like counsellors who bring a simple structure. The 4-4-4-4 Framework is one such structure. It looks at personality, skills, interests and goals, and it is a proposed method that has not been independently validated.
