Can I Go to University If I Failed High School?

William CognityBy William Cognity · 31 October 2026 · 3 min read
In short: Failing high school is not the end. Learn the routes back to university: retaking exams, the GED, foundation years and more.

Failing high school feels like a closed door. For many people it is not. There are several routes back to higher education. Which one fits depends on your country, your age and your goals.

First, be honest about what happened

Write down why it went wrong: health, family, money, wrong subjects, or lack of support. The reason changes the best route. A student who struggled with the system needs a different plan from a student who left for a job.

Route 1: Retake your exams

Many systems let you retake exams as a private candidate or at a college. This can work well when you were close to passing.

Route 2: The GED

The GED is a US high school equivalency credential. It has four subject tests and can often be passed one subject at a time. Many US colleges accept it. Check the rules for any university you want. See the guide to the GED.

Route 3: Foundation or access courses

Some universities run foundation or access programmes for students without standard entry grades. Ask the universities you like what they offer.

Route 4: Work, training and then university

Some students build a record through work, a vocational course or a portfolio, then apply as a mature student. Rules vary a lot by country.

Choose with the end in mind

Start with the course and the universities you want. Then work back to the route they accept. This saves months of study that may not count.

Often not, but it depends on the country and the course. Check with the universities you want.

Which route is fastest?
